Amikacin is a semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic. This antibiotic is derived from a process of acylation on kanamycin A. Amikacin inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosome. Amikacin exhibits many of the physical, chemical, pharmacological, and toxicological properties of kanamycin. However, it shows a broader antimicrobial spectrum than kanamycin, gentamicin, and tobramycin, especially against gram-negative bacteria that are resistant to other drugs.
