Irgasan (triclosan) is a biocide used as a disinfectant and preservative. It has also shown antimicrobial properties. This antibiotic causes destruction of the cell membrane. This antibiotic is used in industrial systems to control the growth of bacteria in cooling towers and wastewater treatment.
High doses of Irgasan have been reported to be genotoxic in rats. Irgasan is used in personal care products such as soaps, toothpaste, mouthwashes, deodorants or body lotions.
