Kanamycin is an aminoglycoside bactericidal antibiotic. This antibiotic is obtained from the bacterium Streptomyces Kanamyceticus and is usually used in the form of kanamycin sulfate.
Kanamycin binds to the 30S ribosome subunit of bacterial cells and inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria that are sensitive to this antibiotic. Like streptomycin and neomycin, this antibiotic exhibits a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as Staphylococci, Klebsiella, Proteus, Shigella, Salmonella, and others.
