Description
Agar bacteriological, also known as agar-agar, is a water-soluble polysaccharide obtained from a marine alga called Gelenium sesquipedale. Agar typically maintains its solid state at incubation temperatures for most microorganisms (up to 65 degrees Celsius) and is usually resistant to degradation by bacterial enzymes. Agar usually melts at a temperature of 85 degrees Celsius or higher, while its solidification temperature is very different and is around 36-32 degrees Celsius. Typically, a concentration of 1-1.5% agar is used in culture media, but if the pH of the culture medium is low (around 5 or lower), it is better to use 2% agar in the medium.
