Description
Tryptone or peptone from casein is the enzymatic digestion product of casein (by pancreatic enzyme) that is used as a nitrogen source in culture media. Casein is the main protein in milk and a rich source of amino acid nitrogen. Tryptone is rich in tryptophan and for this reason, it is considered a suitable option for identifying indole production by bacteria. Due to the lack of detectable amounts of carbohydrates in the composition of tryptone, it is a suitable option for differentiating bacteria based on their ability to ferment various carbohydrates. Tryptone is typically used at a concentration of 1% in the composition of culture media.
